Ceylon Theatres has been associated with the Sri Lankan entertainment industry for over 85 years. Ceylon Theatres Pvt Ltd presently operates twelve screens – Majestic Cineplex (Colombo), Majestic Cineplex (Jaffna), Empire Cineplex (Colombo), Regal (Colombo), Regal (Kandy) and Regal (Negombo). Regal (Colombo) is a leading release centre for Sinhala movies, while Majestic and Empire Cineplex’s releases English and Hindi films.
Ceylon Theatres Pvt Ltd also part owns and operates the Cinema Entertainments Limited (CEL) circuit, and continues to invest in upgrading the facilities in the cinemas. This is to ensure that CT cinemas would provide the best entertainment and facilities, while strongly committing to the development of the movie industry in the country.
Ceylon Theatres commenced in the movie production and exhibition business in 1928 for the purpose of exhibiting, importing and distributing of motion pictures. With the late Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner as its first Chairman and Managing Director, the Company survived many challenges to establish its mark in the industry. Since the 1980s the Company carried a course of rapid expansion.
The Group changed the retail industry by launching the Supermarket concept in the country named Cargills Ceylon Private Limited and also expanded into Restaurants Food manufacturing, Real estate & Stock broking.
In the late 1990s, the Group acquired an interest in Ceramics, Tiles, Plantations and Packaging and also ventured into Financial services.
The Group today hails as one of the largest diversified conglomerates quoted on the Colombo Stock Exchange, with interests in a wide range of industry segments.
